With questions being raised on the quality of work being done by various agencies for the Commonwealth Games, the Delhi government,in a late night meeting on Tuesday, decided to terminate the contract of an electrical firm working in South Delhi. Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Rajkumar Chauhan said his department had found that more than 25 per cent of the streetlights installed by Bajaj Electricals were not working.
The decision was taken in a review meeting held by Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit.
Besides being fined, the company would have to forfeit the remaining money to be paid for its services. There were several complaints that the lights installed by the company were not functional at many places, Chauhan said.
According to Chauhan, three companies were given separate contracts to upgrade and maintain streetlights along 450-odd km of PWDs road network for Rs 198 crore. Bajaj bagged the contract to upgrade streetlights along a 144-km-long road network in PWDs Zone 1.
