Sheila seeks diasporas help
Seeking the participation of the diaspora in diverse fields,including the infrastructure sector,Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit on Friday said their expertise will help the Delhi government in making the Capital one of the best global cities. Well be very happy to use your help and expertise in diverse sectors like education,health and infrastructure, Dikshit said,addressing delegates at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. Dikshit said the city has managed to grow at a rapid pace to improve the standard of living of residents. She said although the government has undertaken massive construction activities as part of the preparation for the Commonwealth Games,equally greater care has been taken to ensure that the projects do not adversely affect the environment. Dikshit assured all help to NRIs and Persons of Indian Origin who wish to invest in Delhi.
More institutes to train private guards
The Delhi government on Friday began the process of registration of private security firms. The government said more institutes to train security guards will be set up soon. Private players will be invited by the government to set up these schools,and the government is working on the specifications and syllabuses for such schools. The home guards of Delhi Police have been asked at present to train private security guards, a senior Home department official said. But they cannot alone meet the demand for training nearly 3 lakh guards in the Capital. The Delhi Police has also expressed inability to verify each security guard.
A 61-year-old man foiled a robbery bid after three assailants tried to snatch Rs 7,500 from him at Kamla Market,North Delhi,on Thursday night. Police said the incident occurred around 10.30 pm when the victim,Mahendra Kumar,an advertisement contractor with the Delhi Metro,was going towards his house in Chawri Bazar. Three persons asked him for directions and started walking with him. After a few meters,the three snatched his money and started running. Kumar managed to nab one of them and called up the police, a police officer said. Locals handed over the man to the police.
Dharna at civic body headquarters
Hundreds of sanitation workers on Friday staged a dharna at the MCD headquarters to press for a slew of demands,including payment of arrears of the sixth pay panel. After the sit-in at Town Hall under the aegis of the Akhil Bharatiya Safai Mazdoor Sangh,workers submitted a charter of demands to Mayor Kanwar Sain. Among the key demands are provision of an alternative to the biometric system of attendance,payment of 60 per cent arrears of the Sixth Pay Commission and making temporary workers permanent,union leaders said.
