American dancer Roxrite Gelgado and Pelezinho from Brazil first met Frenchman Lilou and South African Benny Benjamin, while they were competing for a break dancing title in South Africa two years ago. Little did they know then, that they would tour India together in July 2009. Their break dancing technique is called B-boying and the dancers who do this art form are called B-boys. And this quartet of B-Boys will be performing their fancy footwork and head spins at Delhis F-Bar on July 24.
B-Boying is part of hip-hop. B really stands for Breaking since the dancer breaks each beat with a movement. B-Boying involves acrobatics, moves which include spins and freezes, explains 27-year-old Gelgado who adds,Its different from street dancing.
And it is this difficult technique that the B-Boys are preparing to teach at a workshop being held at Blue Bells School, starting today. We are very excited about teaching B-Boying in Delhi, says 22-year-old Benjamin, whose style is dominated by awesome power moves like air flares and full-body spins. MJs dance style was great to watch. But it hasnt influenced my style since he was not into B-Boying,said Benjamin when we ask him about the legends contribution to break dance. Gelgado, has a different plan for the workshop. Its more concept and innovation,so people can create their own routine instead of just doing steps, says Gelgado.
Hailing from four different countries, the boys have already performed in Mumbai and will head to Banglore and Goa to perform. We met on a battleground but over a period of time we have become friends, says Lilou. But when they find themselves on the dance floor, instinct takes over. Look out for a mix of routine steps and individual skill that defines their performance.
The workshop begins today from 4-8 pm everyday till July 24. For more info contact 9873795796
