Forgetful Elephant in Greater Kailash I needs to brush up its act if it doesn’t want to end up as a bad memory

With a name like Forgetful Elephant, you know you have a conversation starter on your hands. This restaurant with a quirky name, that’s recently opened in GK-I M block market, definitely makes you want to go that extra mile in trying to figure out what it is all about. At the entrance is a plastic elephant in a black coat, resembling a lawyer more than a chef, inviting you into this two level restaurant. The first floor is decked out like an English country club house, with flower-printed chair cushions, oak furniture and even a mock fireplace that simulates the warmth and feel of an elegant British bistro. It is impressive as you go another flight up and enter what looks like an English pub. It’s a sprawl, and you can easily imagine the place’s potential to indulge you with a long, lazy brunch.

The menu, bright green with a jaunty elephant on the cover— in case the amnesia has already set in— has a quintessentially English breakfast, with regulars such as eggs-to-order,bangers and mash with bacon, full English breakfast and liver, bacon and onions. We begin our meal with a brown onion, ale and cheddar cheese soup (Rs 155),served with a shot of fizzy ale that you may add to the broth, and a roasted chicken celery and blue cheese soup (Rs 155). The onion soup with the ale was rich, and the chicken-celery soup,a bit runny, but nonetheless flavourful.

The DJ was spinning some hip hop that seemed a little incongruous, but unobtrusive enough to let us focus on the knick-knacks in the restaurant— like the elephant-shaped cabinet knobs,elephant-print photo frames and a row of books. Coming back to the menu,we couldn’t help notice that the potato, cheese and steak options on the menu call out for some good alcohol to wash them down, but the restaurant is yet to get its alcohol license. For the mains we had a meat and potato pie (Rs 325) and a mustard and ham stuffed chicken breast (Rs 325). The portions are delightfully, well, elephantine and the attention to detail— the salad piled up neatly on the edge of the plate,a sprinkling of dill on the chicken—commendable. From here, unfortunately,it was a steady decline.

We quickly laid our forks to rest as the pie’s pastry was unpardonably rubbery, and the minced lamb and potato stuffing stale. Though the chicken was copious,it was unevenly cooked and ultimately way too chewy. The dessert,a twin ice cream cake wasn’t thrilling, the two layers of butterscotch and chocolate were like any other average ice-cream stacked with a layer of cake. The ambience is great, the prices perfect, but the food so far, only makes for bad memories.
