Babette’s Feast

A chic French restaurant slathered in Parisian tropes and cliches,is the latest Mediterranean destination in Hauz Khas

Sip your Mojito as you watch the sun set into the evening skyĀ” proclaims a white board outside a clunky elevator that takes guests four floors up to Amour, the new restaurant in Hauz Khas Village. However, there was no sign of a setting sun when we arrived. That was hardly a dampener; because if there is one thing Amour scores in,itĀ’s the fantastic ambience it has to offer.

This two month old patio-cum-restaurant bar sits on the rooftop of a building overlooking the 13th century ruins, dense treetops of the Deer park and the Hauz Khas lake. Once inside,we had the option of either sitting indoors (a nicely done up room with a bar) or head outside. At 20 covers, the outdoors look like an inviting place Ā— candle light and lamps, cushy white seating,a slightly raised wooden platform with high chairs for drinks, leaning palm trees and a central grill to look at the two chefs toss and fire the pizza and chicken.

After a good 20 minutes of straining our eyes and trying to decipher the rustic string bound menu by the dim candlelight,we chose the sushi vegan courgette from the appetiser section. This ‘vegetarian’ sushi comprised a delicious warm gooey cheese-mushroom paste wrapped in zucchini and sprinkled with fried spring onions on top. We also ordered a plate of king prawns a la plancha with Moroccan couscous that was served with sweet brandy-orange sauce, baby corn, mushroom and sticky rice. We sipped on our glasses of Mediterranean guava juice,(which distinctly tasted like the diluted version of the regular canned Guava nectar)and cosmopolitan,as the central grill prepared to send out our wood-fired Amour pizza. When it came, each bite was soft, cheesy and fresh off the flames . However, what gave us a rude shock was the risotto, the last fusion served with porcini mushroom, chorizo and gold saffron sauce that was bland and insipid.

We asked the waiter to serve us their best desserts, and minutes later,an enticing plate of tiramisu and brandy-flavoured volcan chocolate greeted us. Relatively new and hugely expensive, the eatery seems to be doing brisk business. If thereĀ’s one reason you should visit Amour,itĀ’s the stellar atmosphere because this new restaurant aims for the stars Ā— both in its price and its view. Bon Appetit.
