Azadpur traders keep up protest against cops

Fruit and vegetable market traders in Azadpur on Monday continued their protest against the lax attitude of the police towards snatchers and highway robbers two days after a businessman was shot dead by bike-borne assailants.

The market association closed all shops in the area and broke the windows of a DTC bus.

Azadpur market businessmen staged a protest today asking the police and the authorities to provide them with enough security that they do not become easy prey to robbers and snatchers. “The authorities have to assure us that we are safe here and won’t be killed like our friends while going home by some criminals,” said Naresh Kumar,a businessman who was a part of the protest.

Protestors also demanded that proper compensation should be given to the family of the deceased and his killers should be arrestedat the earliest. Police said that the protestors also broke windows of a DTC bus.

On Saturday,Badre Alam,40,and Ravinder,47,two accountants who were on their way to office in Azadpur market on their scooter stopped were fired upon by the two bike-borne assailants when they stopped at a traffic signal. The assailants fled with a bag containing ledgers,said a senior police officer. Ravinder and Alam were rushed to Max Hospital at Pitampura where Alam was declared dead on arrival while Ravinder was seriously wounded.
