Awaiting age verification,DDCA grounds U-16 squad

Once again internal rumblings within the Delhi & District Cricket Association has come back to haunt the players.

Once again internal rumblings within the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) has come back to haunt the players. The selection of Delhi under-16 team for the Vijay Merchant Trophy was postponed till Tuesday night,as a result the team would only reach Patiala a day before their first match on Thursday.

What raises eyebrows is the fact that the trial for this team started two months back and the selectors led by former India pacer Robin Singh, are still awaiting age-verification reports of the 78 probables who had undergone medical tests at Apollo hospital, before they sit to chalk out their final squad.

And all this, despite setting up a Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) with iconic cricketers on board this season.

Interestingly, the team was originally expected to leave on Tuesday morning, and the players had all arrived at the Ferozeshah Kotla with their kitbags and suitcases with the hope of finding their names on the touring party. The selectors too waited all day long, expecting the results by the day before informing the boys about the change in travel schedule.

According to sources, the selectors eina fit of rage even contemplated giving a walkover for the first game and refrain from picking the squad before they were pacified. They have alleged that the delay in getting the reports were done deliberately after they did not entertain pressures to include a candidate from a powerful executive member of the DDCA.

When contacted Robin Singh admitted that the delay was detrimental to the team’s interests but refused to speak on the reasons behind it. “From our side we are ready but we cannot go ahead without waiting for the medical reports on their age. Its frustrating because we had worked so hard over the past two months in picking the best of the lot but now they will get little time before they play,” he said. “But I hope they will do well.”

The Delhi under-14 team was earlier picked at the nick of the moment and traveled to Srinagar just a day before their game while the Delhi under-22 team was picked in a similar fashion.
