On December 10, four police officers had arrived at their rented flat in Subhash Nagar and accused them, four college students, of running illegal activities, including an illegal call centre. Scared, they had allowed the men to search their flat only to see one of the officers whip out a pistol and rob them of around Rs 1.55 lakh at gunpoint before fleeing.
On Tuesday, after a week-long investigation, the four men – Manpreet Singh, Junaid Wasid, Kuldeep Singh, and Sarabjeet – were arrested for posing as police officers and robbing the students.
A probe into the matter was launched after the victims approached the Hari Nagar police station. “A case of robbery was registered against four unknown individuals on December 11. Manpreet Singh, Junaid Wasid, and Kuldeep Singh were arrested first with the help of technical assistance. Sarabjeet was arrested from Tilak Nagar based on information provided by the other three,” said DCP (West) Vichitra Veer.
During questioning, the four men – all residents of West Delhi – allegedly confessed to planning the robbery after receiving information that the students might be involved in illegal activities and would thus refrain from reporting the matter to the police.
The police have so far recovered Rs 1 lakh of the looted cash, a pistol, a live cartridge, and a car used in the crime, an officer said.
