Lajpat Nagar blast: sentence on Apr 22
After being convicted in the 1996 Lajpat Nagar bomb blast case earlier this month, the pronouncement of the sentence for the six militants was deferred on Saturday by a city court in the absence of the judge. District and Sessions Judge S P Garg, who had also convicted the six,was on leave. On April 8,the court had rapped the police for its highly defective probe and acquitted four out of the 10 accused. The prosecution has sought death penalty for four among the six, allegedly belonging to the Jammu & Kashmir Islamic Front.
A Delhi court allowed the police plea seeking 30 more days to complete its probe and file chargesheet against two alleged Indian Mujahideen militants for their roles in serial blasts in Delhi in 2008. The court set May 15 as the date for police to submit the chargesheet against the two accused,Shahzad and Salman. The public prosecutor submitted the police had completed its probe against Shahzad in cases registered with Tilak Marg and Karol Bagh police stations and were only awaiting sanction for his prosecution. Against Salman, the court was told the matter of his age was pending before the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate.
