A fire broke out in a single-room nail polish manufacturing unit in Vijay Nagar in Model Town killing two workers who suffered 90 per cent burn injuries,police said. Manju and Raju,who worked at the unit,were trapped in the room and by the time the fire engines arrived and the fire was brought under control,they had been injured badly,sources said. The fire broke out around 7 pm Thursday. The injured were rushed to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital where doctors declared them dead on arrival,police said. While the exact reason of the fire has not been ascertained,police personnel suspect bottles of inflammable liquid that they recovered from the unit could have led to the fire. A case is yet to be registered.

13 fresh dengue cases
With 13 fresh cases of dengue,the total number of patients suffering from the vector-borne disease in Delhi climbed to 1,054 on Thursday. The city has reported over 400 cases of dengue in the last fortnight but the number of cases per day has been declining over the past few days.

Man kills self
A 22-year-old man committed suicide in his rented flat in Indirapuram after his family refused to let him marry his girlfriend,police officials said. Akhilesh Gautam,originally from Bareilly,was found hanging in his flat at Shipra Suncity in Ghaziabad by a neighbour on Thursday morning after which he alerted the police. A suicide note was found next to the body that said he was in love with a girl and their families were not ready for their marriage,police said.

Jeevan kiosk opened
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday inaugurated a ‘Jeevan kiosk’ which is a one-stop shop for various services including payment of phone bills,property and income tax. Jeevan kiosk is a Delhi Government initiative to provide single window services to its citizens and so far 250 such kiosks are functioning across the city. Inaugurating the kiosks at the India International Trade Fair,Dikshit said new facilities have been added to the kiosks now and people will be able to even access services like railway ticket booking,paying of LIC premium and MTNL bills. She said number of Jeevan Kiosks would touch more than 500 in the coming years.

Open schools
The Commonwealth Open Schooling Association (COMOSA) adopted the first constitution of the Commonwealth Schooling Association in the first two days of its inaugural meet on November 23 and 24 in the Capital. The COMOSA is a collaborative organisation that intends to support the open schooling efforts of institutions in Commonwealth countries and promote innovative and gender-sensitive programmes of school education through the distance-learning mode. The organisation will help network and develop advocacy programmes in these countries.

Mount Carmel annual day
Students of Mount Carmel Junior School treated viewers to a cultural extravaganza on their annual day celebrations on Friday. A cast of 155 children from Class I to Class III staged the musical,The Pied Piper of Hamelin. Children of Prep and Nursery also entertained visitors with their songs in English,Hindi,German and Swahili. Dinesh Gupta,Member,Public Grievances Commission,was the chief guest.
