Man held for staging sons abduction
NEW DELHI: A man was arrested along with two others in the Capital for allegedly staging the kidnapping of his 12-year-old son to implicate a person with whom he had an ongoing financial dispute. According to the police,complainant Ajit Sharma had informed the police on November 3 that his son,a Class VIII student,had been kidnapped while returning from his school in Anand Vihar. Sharma told them he had later received a ransom call of Rs 30 lakh and that he suspected a man in his area to be behind the kidnapping as the two were was involved in a financial dispute over Rs 1.5 lakh. Later,however,the police grew suspicious of the complainant and put him under technical surveillance. When interrogated,Sharma confessed the crime. Sharma deals in iron and runs a shop in Ghaziabad.
Safer drinking water at railway stations
NEW DELHI: Railway stations across the country will soon have reverse osmosis (RO) water purifiers to provide free drinking water to the public,beginning with New Delhi station,which will get at least two such drinking water outlets. According to the Railways,the machines will have a dispensing capacity of 300 litres per hour and will be installed by a private firm.
Rickshaw-pullers put up demands
noida: The Noida rickshaw-pullers association has given a charter of demands to the district administration and Noida authority officials demanding that the routes earlier blocked to them by the authority should be opened to them. The association also demanded that the rickshaw-pullers whose rickshaws were broken by the police should be compensated. Since October 1,the police have broken at least 2,000 rickshaws. We need them to stop this inhumanity towards the poor, said Ramakant Singh,the president of the association.
Students injured
NEW DELHI: Three students of Balmiki School,in Badarpur area,were injured when the minibus they were travelling in turned turtle on Wednesday morning. The students were identified as Neetu (Class X),Preeti (Class IX) and Rama (Class XI). The minibus,which was carrying 20 to 25 girls,was headed towards Meethapur extension at 7.30 pm when the accident happened. The driver is absconding and a case of rash and negligent driving has been registered.
DUSU president detained
NEW DELHI: President of the Delhi University Students Union Manoj Choudhary was detained by the police on Wednesday for allegedly creating a ruckus inside the DU Vice Chancellors office. The DUSU president had,on an appointment,gone to meet VC Deepak Pental to discuss the re-allotment of the old DUSU office. When Choudharys supporters denied entry into the office with him,he allegedly threw files and created mayhem inside the VCs office. No case has been registered.
Doctor gets six years in jail
NEW DELHI: A doctor was sentenced to a six-year jail term by a city court on Wednesday for culpable homicide of a woman at Hotel India Continental four years ago. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on Suresh Menon,an eye surgeon from Chennai,after holding him guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under IPC Section 304 Part II.
Man convicted for rape
NEW DELHI: A city court sentenced a man to seven years in jail for raping a mentally challenged minor two years ago. The court relied on the testimony of the victim who identified the accused. A fine of Rs 2,000 was also imposed upon convict Rattan Mandal,a resident of South Delhi.
