Last date for EWS admissions now extended to May 10

New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Thursday extended the last date of admissions for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) students to May 10. Education Committee chairman Mahinder Nagpal said the decision to extend the last date,which previously stood at February 15,was extended for the benefit of parents who were unable to procure the documents required for the purpose. A child,whose parents earn less than 1 lakh rupees per annum and have been staying in Delhi for the last three years,comes under the EWS student category.

Property row: Man shoots at grandfather

Gurgaon: A 65-year-old man was allegedly shot at by his grandson at his residence in Pandah village on Thursday. The accused,identified as Manoj (22),allegedly shot at his grandfather,Ram Singh,thrice in a fit of rage. Police said the motive was a land dispute going on since 2008. The accused,Manoj,is on the run. A senior police officer of Badshahpur police station said,“We have formed teams to search for the culprit.” Police said Manoj was serving a life sentence for the murder of his other grandfather,whom he had killed in 2008 over the same land dispute. Ram Singh has been admitted to a hospital and is said to be a critical.

Retired scientist duped of his villa

Gurgaon: A retired scientist of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre was allegedly duped of his home in Palam Vihar,police said. Jaiprakash,owner of a property in Palam Vihar,found that his villa was occupied by one Vinod after returning from Hyderabad,police said. During interrogation,Vinod produced all relevant property papers and the police found out that a man impersonating Jaiprakash had sold the property. Further investigations are on to nab the accused.

Two held for sandalwood theft

Gurgaon: Two persons — residents of Chennai — were arrested for trying to smuggle sandalwood logs into Delhi through Gurgaon. More than 150 pieces of sandalwood were recovered from the truck of the accused. Police said the truck was travelling from Hyderabad and did not have proper permits.
