Two more persons were held by the Northwest Delhi police for involvement in a failed robbery bid at the residence of 68-year-old businessman Rajender Khosla on May 22.

Two more persons were held by the Northwest Delhi police for involvement in a failed robbery bid at the residence of 68-year-old businessman Rajender Khosla on May 22. Khosla had successfully fought off the three armed robbers— he was fired upon thrice,stabbed once and hit several times with pistol butts. The police said Khosla,his wife and daughter-in-law were at their home in 1573,Outram Lane when the men armed with two pistols and a knife barged in at 11.45 am. As Khosla fended off the robbers,his daughter-in-law rushed out of the house and raised an alarm. Two accused escaped while the third,identified as Sunil Singh,was overpowered and handed over to the police. The other two accused,identified as Raj Singh and Ravinder Singh,were arrested at Sunil’s instance,the officials added.

Foreigners get bail in drug trafficking case
A special court on Thursday granted bail to two foreigners who were in prison since their arrest in 2007 for allegedly trafficking heroin. The two,Saleh Mohd,an Afghan national,and Augustine,a Nigerian national,were also asked to pay surety of Rs 50,000 each. The court also directed the missions of Afghanistan and Nigeria here to file undertakings that they will not issue any travel documents to the accused till the trial ends. The two were arrested from Dwarka by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell,which claimed to have recovered heroin from their possession.

Ministry to oversee Haj preparations
The Delhi High Court has turned down a plea by the National Haj Committee to allow its chairperson and vice-chairperson to oversee arrangements for the annual pilgrimage starting August. Holding that the stay on their functioning would continue till disposal of a case against them,the court asked the External Affairs Ministry to look into this year’s Haj pilgrimage arrangements. In March,the court had restrained senior Congress leader Mohsina Kidwai,the committee’s chairperson,and two other office-bearers from functioning due to allegations of election irregularities.

Notice to Medha Patkar in defamation case
The Delhi High Court has issued notice to Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar on a petition seeking her prosecution for allegedly filing a fake medical certificate to seek exemption from personal appearance in defamation cases at trial courts. The court asked the NBA leader to respond to the allegations levelled by petitioner V K Saxena,president of National Council for Civil Liberties.

Anti-littering law: MCD to seek public view
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is planning to invite public opinion on the anti-littering law. Under the law,fines for offences like spitting,littering and urinating in public,among others,will be increased substantially. “We had sent it to the Delhi government for approval and were asked to invite people’s views on the law. We want to implement it before the Games ,” said a senior MCD official. Under the anti-littering law,spitting,defecating and bathing in public places would invite penalties between Rs 200 and Rs 500. The MCD can at present issue fines only up to Rs 50 for the same offences.
