Having started off the amateur season with a bang,Laverry Kumar is set to give her golfing career a new high. The 17-year-old Delhi player will be off to Saddlebrook golf school in Florida to finish her schooling as she prepares for the tough collegiate golf circuit next year.
Laverry, who ran away with two consecutive amateur tour titles in Panchkula and Delhi in the last two weeks, says she took the decision to raise the level of competition for herself and get ready for the grilling college-level circuit that is the popular choice of many top amateurs before they feel comfortable about the professional transition.
I had begun receiving invites from a couple of colleges, but I realised I needed to figure out which one suited me best. This way I get to play on the circuit one step down to that one and spend time sharpening my skills among similar competition before taking a decision, Laverry says, speaking to Sportline on Wednesday.
Saddlebrook, the headquarters for the Arnold Palmer Golf Academy, includes golf as an equal part of curriculum, developing individual plans for each student based on their strengths and weaknesses. It is a golf-based school, but there is also a lot of emphasis on education, which was the key for me in making my choice, Laverry says. Ill have a selection of coaches to work with there.
Saddlebrook students take part in Future Collegians World Tour and the International Junior Golf Tour, though Laverry knows making the school team will be a challenge with the level of competition. Im sure Ill have to fight my way into the team, but the challenge is exciting, she says.
But before she starts her lessons there,Laverry, who finished fourth at the junior British Open around the same time last year, will represent the country at the Callaway World Junior championships from July 13-16 in California in the 15-17 years division along with another Delhi girl,Shreya Ghei.
