A 50-YEAR-OLD woman, who had managed to escape from the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2008,was arrested by the police from Rohini on Wednesday morning. The accused reportedly tried to escape arrest by posing as a labourer, but failed.
According to police, the accused identified as Raj had escaped from CBI custody in 2008,while she was being produced in the Patiala House Court. Raj was one of the key accused in a pension scam,in which 20 other people were
also booked. She and five others managed to escape from court in 2008,and have been absconding since then. A case was registered under Sections 223 and 224 of the Indian Penal Code, said Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) K C Dwivedi.
The accused persons had allegedly forged documents pertaining to hundreds of people identifying them as railway employees to illegally procure funds in the 2005 pension scam. Raj,hailing from Fatehabad area in Haryana, was one of main conspirators in granting pensions to people by fraud. Her husband Ashok, who is now dead, was an Indian Railways employee and used to provide the fake IDs, a senior police officer said.
After a long search, police finally declared Raj a proclaimed offender on September 3,2010. She was arrested at 11 am on Wednesday from the Rohini court, after police received information that she would be coming there. We had been tracking Raj for a long time now,and knew she would come to the Rohini court to check the status of certain forgery and cheating cases registered against her. We worked out the dates of those cases, and made plans accordingly. A team of three policemen from New Delhis Tilak Marg police station was deployed in the area, the official said.
When she sensed that there were policemen in the area,Raj tried to trick them by posing as a labourer. She draped a tattered shawl around her to give the impression that she belonged to the labour class. But we managed to identify him, he added.
