Transport minister Gopal Rai on Sunday suspended 20 Delhi Transport Corporation bus drivers for failing to report to work without informing the authorities. Rai paid a surprise visit to the DTC’s Rajghat depot and was told 20 drivers had not reported to work on Sunday.

“Twenty regular drivers found absent had not given any intimation or reason to the authorities concerned for their unauthorised absence from duty,” a government official said.

The Rajghat depot has a fleet of 170 buses but the number of buses leaving the depot in the evening are often fewer than this for various reasons, including unexplained absence of drivers, the official said.

“The minister found only 100 buses had left the depot and 57 were parked. The reason given was that these buses were at the depot due to non-availability of drivers,” the official said.
