Over 2.5 lakh students applying for around 54,000 seats in 70-odd colleges. This pretty much summed up the situation on Monday, the last day for submission of forms for the four-year undergraduate programme of Delhi University.

According to DU officials, a record number of 2,74,381 applications were received by the University, both online and offline, this year. Last year, DU had sold around 1, 60,000 forms over the counter.

With 2,40,611 online registrations till 6 pm on Monday, the number of online registrations too has seen a dramatic rise. Last year, the university had received 1,22,957 online submissions.

Unlike the first few days, the number of applicants visiting the admission information centres in Delhi University fell considerably, but last-minute rush could be witnessed at some centres.

This final spurt made Daulat Ram College and GTB Khalsa college extend the time for submission of forms till 4 pm on Monday. Online registrations for admission are open till midnight Monday to avoid any inconvenience to students, Malay Neerav, Joint Dean of Student Welfare, told Newsline.

The last day saw panic-stricken students with parents and friends in tow, coming to the university to submit their forms.

“At the beginning of every admission season, during the open days, we tell students not to wait till the last minute, but invariably, there is always a rush on the last day resulting in students panicking unnecessarily,” a student volunteer at the admissions helpdesk said.

Applicants will now have to wait till June 24 when the first cut-off list will be announced. st Stephen’s cut-off lists likely on June 18

St Stephen’s College is likely to come out with its cut-off list for various undergraduate courses by June 18. However, it remains unclear whether the college will deduct 2.5 per cent from the aggregate marks of aspirants who had opted for informatics practices as an elective subject in their Class XII. In its admission guidelines, the DU has said the students who had chosen informatics practices in Class XII may lose 2.5 per cent from the aggregate marks for admission into FYUP.

Taking exception to the DU guidelines, the CBSE had sought a review of the decision and suggested that the same advantage be accorded to those who had opted for informatics practices as the others. Though the college has said it will follow DU guidelines, with DU yet to arrive at a decision, it remains unclear on how the college will deal with these students.
