Woman inmate who escaped from Chennai’s Puzhal prison nabbed in Bengaluru

On December 13, A Jayanthi was found missing when jail officials took a head count of the inmates at the women’s jail in Puzhal.

The 32-year-old woman prisoner who escaped from the Special Jail for Women in Puzhal on the outskirts of Chennai three days ago was nabbed by the police from Bengaluru on Saturday.

A Jayanthi, who hails from Bengaluru and lived in Perumbakkam before her arrest, had been held in connection with three cases of theft at K-8 Arumbakkam police station and two other theft cases at Choolaimedu police station, and remanded in judicial custody at the special prison. Based on the orders of Greater Chennai Police (GCP) Commissioner Sandeep Rai Rathore, Jayanthi was detained under the Goondas Act on November 21.

“The special teams rushed to Bengaluru and carried out an extensive probe for two days before arresting Jayanthi, who was hiding in the forest area near Govenpur Nagar in Bengaluru, early on Saturday morning. She has been brought to Chennai,” a statement from the police said.

On December 13, Jayanthi was found missing when jail officials took a head count of the inmates in the evening. Earlier in the day, escorted by two wardens, she had reportedly cleaned the visitors’ room area. The wardens were suspended on Thursday.

A case was then registered at Puzhal police station and two special teams were formed to nab the absconding accused. The police said they received a tip-off that Jayanthi was hiding in Bengaluru.
