A stray dog was beaten to death after it bit at least 29 people in under two hours on a busy street in Chennai Tuesday evening. The local people suspected the dog might have been rabid.
The victims, including several older people and five children, received treatment at Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital in Chennai after sustaining severe injuries due to the dog bites at GA road, Washermanpet. Greater Chennai Corporation officials said the dog was sent to the Madras Veterinary College for post-mortem.
Speaking to Indianexpress.com, Dr J Kamal Hussain, veterinary officer, GCP, said, “We still don’t know whether the dog was provoked or was infected by rabies. We are waiting for the post-mortem report. On the other hand, the people who sustained injuries were given the first doses of the anti-rabies vaccine on Tuesday, and they would be given four more doses. All of them have returned home, and we are monitoring them closely,” he said.

The city veterinary officer added that as a preemptive measure before receiving the post-mortem report, the civic body captured 25 other dogs and five puppies from that area and kept them under observation.
“The corporation captures about 80-90 dogs daily in vehicles specifically meant for this purpose across all 16 zones. This year, around 17,000 dogs have been captured for sterilisation and for providing anti-rabies vaccination,” Hussain added.
