The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall for the next seven days.(Twitter/ Screengrab/ ANI) Several districts in Tamil Nadu witnessed heavy rain Thursday morning and the Vellore district administration declared a holiday for students of classes 1 to 5.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, Tirupathur recorded 10 cm of rainfall, followed by Arcot (Ranipet district) and Polur (Tiruvannamalai district) with 9 cm. Cheyyar (8 cm) and Arani (7 cm) of Tiruvannamalai districts also recorded a good amount of rainfall.
Moderate thunderstorm and lightning is likely to occur for a few hours at isolated places over Chennai and its neighbouring districts, including Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Ranipet, according to the Met department. As per the latest bulletin, a cyclonic circulation lies over the Comorin area & neighbourhood at 3.1 km above mean sea level.

As for Chennai, the sky will likely be partly cloudy for the next 24 hours. Light/moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur in some areas, with the maximum temperature likely to be 33-34 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature around 26 degrees Celsius, the bulletin noted.
Meanwhile, Municipal Administration Minister K N Nehru chaired a monsoon preparedness meeting at the Ripon Building Wednesday with representatives of various agencies like Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSS), Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), Highways Department, and took stock of the status of the works carried out by each department.

According to a statement from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), the minister informed the officials to expedite the existing preparatory works before the onset of monsoon to avoid any inconvenience to the public.
Chennai Corporation Commissioner R Radhakrishnan informed that road cut works carried through the CMWSS, TNEB, departments in bus routes and other link roads in 15 zones in the city are stalled until further orders.
