Tamil Nadu Minister for Municipal Administration KN Nehru held a review meeting in Chennai on Thursday to discuss the status of ongoing projects by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) and Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).

Officials stated Chennai’s current drinking water supply is around 1,000 million litres daily, benefitting 85 lakh residents. The supply comes from reservoirs and desalination plants at various locations including Poondi, Sholavaram and Red Hill.

According to GCC, during the meeting, the officials noted that work on the 150 million litres per day (MLD) desalination plant at Nemmeli is nearing completion. Also, construction has begun on the 400 MLD plant at Perur on East Coast Road, for which CM Stalin laid the foundation in August.

Minister Nehru directed timely completion of desilting stormwater drains and removing water hyacinth before the northeast monsoon. He emphasised use of proper safety gear by workers.

Officials were told to finish underground drainage and water supply projects in recently added areas like Manali, Madhavaram, Valasaravakkam, etc. before deadline, in coordination with various departments.

They were instructed to immediately repair dug-up roads and ensure no public hindrance before the monsoon.
