This one’s well-timed. With Gandhi Jayanti a day away,German luxury brand Montblanc has dished out a limited edition ‘writing instrument’ in honour of the Father of the nation. Terming it as a homage to the ambassador of non-violence,the makers of Montblanc have crafted two specials – the Mahatma Gandhi Limited Edition 241 fountain pen and the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Edition 3000. “It’s our way of paying a tribute to the historical leader as well as re-asserting the power of the written word. He led a movement that was non-violent and braved all odds…the Mahatma’s story will inspire generations,” spoke Montblanc’s vice-president (sales),Sonke Tornieporth who was in the city recently at the brand’s Chandigarh boutique.

It’s also for the first time that an Indian has been the source for inspiration for the German brand that’s seen as a global leader in the art of crafting fine writing instruments. “Yes,each year we zero in on inspiring personalities from across the globe and use personality traits while crafting the collection,” explains Tornieporth as we eye the ‘Mahatma Gandhi Limited Edition 241’ complete with its saffron ink! The story of the “turning point” in Mahatma Gandhi’s struggle to obtain India’s independence starts at the tip of this pen. The 18 karat gold,rhodium-plated nib displays an intricate,hand-engraved depiction of Gandhi,at age 60,setting off, with his bamboo stave in hand,on his Dandi March. “The distance of 241 miles which Mahatma Gandhi and his followers travelled by foot during the march has inspired the name and limited edition quantity of this solid white gold piston fountain pen,” mentions Sonke who has been carrying the 241 on his trip to India. Interestingly,Montblanc has also presented Tusshar Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and president of the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation with the first set along with a donation of Rs 72 lakh to the Foundation. “Montblanc has worked closely with the charities of the world by way of proceeds and special events…it’s not something new for us,” points out Sonke. Speaking of business, there’s more to Montblanc now than just pens. “Apart from jewellery and leather accessories we now have our own watch movements and that’s an area we are focussing on,” Sonke sums up.
