A new TV guide is on air to help you navigate the maze of television channels
Did you know that 70 per cent of television sessions are unplanned? Seven out of ten times people dont know what they are watching,so,instead, they just waste time surfing through hundreds of channels. Atul Phadnis,CEO of Whats On India,Indias first television guidance channel had,for long, thought about the clueless, travellers of the tellyland. I was working with TAM media who track TRPs for television. It was 2004,and Direct To Home had entered the Indian space. It was fascinating and all I could think of was how would the Indian television viewer handle the influx of hundreds of channels? How will they decide what to watch? Television is a dynamic medium, and there is something happening every minute. So we decided to arm the consumer with a choice the right to scroll and choose the best programme for the day, he says.
With millions of homes moving to DTH service every month,Phadnis and his team are making it easy for viewers with their recommendations on TV and the internet. The Whats On India channel recommends the best shows to watch across different interest areas round-the-clock to its viewers, besides showing sneak previews and promotional messages from various broadcasters. When you have a 200-plus channel base to choose from,it can usually turn into an unpleasant experience, and the useless channel switching can cause anxiety and frustration. At the end of the day,one tends to miss out on a good programme. Our team is constantly analysing, collecting data and posting recommendationexample, you wont get a cookery show on prime time. As a result, the consumer gets a list of the best shows, movies, videos and promos. There is also a ticker which scrolls on major channels on what to watch next, says Phadnis, who has a tie up with Airtel DTH and Dish and will soon have one with Tata Sky too.
My Childs TeeVee is Indias first show on parental TV guidance aimed at creating awareness among parents about the adverse effects of excessive television viewing on their kids. The show will be hosted by the famous Amrita Raichand and will have eminent doctors like on board. This was a by-product of our research. A lot of young parents have their kids watching television for six to eight hours a day,and parents are unable to penetrate this bond between the child and TV. Seventy per cent of children are in front of the televison past 10 pm,50 per cent of that viewership is between four and 14 years old. Most of the kids indulge in unsupervised viewing. Its a losing battle for the parents and hence we came up with Childs Teevee which addresses such complicated issues, Phadnis signs off.
