Chandeliers truly have come a long way. Till some years back, one would only spot them in the Hindi movies where a large-sized chandelier would swing from the roof of a spooky haveli! But how times have changed for one look up at the ceiling of any newly built home and there’s an attractive array of lights shining back at you. From five-star hotels to sprawling bungalows to even cubby flats,it’s the done thing to hang up a chandelier in your drawing room. They indeed light up your home by giving an elegant and royal look. We scouted around the city for a trend report on the same. We found all shapes and sizes,in all variety and quality, and of course those who don’t want their electricity bills to hike up,there are special ones as well. “We have got the latest variety this year including those imported from China and Japan. Special crystal hangings, glass glitter pieces,antique-lookalikes,multi-coloured ones are in,” mentioned Surinder Singhal, owner of Chandigarh Lite Hub in Manimajra. As far as popular ones go,Singhal tells us that those shaped like a vase,match-box,bottle,dolphin,and candles do really well. “The moon-stars design is quite a bestseller,” he adds. Interestingly, these chandeliers aren’t bulky and heavy. “There are huge ones only for a hotel but we have medium-weights for bungalows and very light-weight ones for flats,” informs Singhal. Speaking of options, there are also those that give different light effects. The revolving chandelier with a spherical shape is quite a pick as it not only emits yellow light but blue, green and red as well. The chandeliers are priced Rs 400 onwards.

For those who are worried about exorbitant electricity bills, special LED chandeliers that consume less energy are available. “LED chandeliers are the latest and ideal for homes,” shares Sumeet Gupta, owner of Jai Maa Electricals in Sector 8,Panchkula. Priced Rs 3,000 onwards,LED chandeliers too come in interesting designs, shapes and sizes. “Chandeliers made from brass work well for places like hotels and bigger buildings while the crystal ones are good for lower ceilings,” informs Gupta.
