Week later,MC fails to detect cause of water contamination

Two days after the Municipal Corporation isolated a part of Vikas Nagar,Mauli Jagran, where more cases of diarrhoea were reported, the root cause of contamination of water is yet undetected. The water supply pipelines in the area have been dug up. The leakage in the pipeline,if any, that led to water getting contaminated has not been found till now.

As many as 103 cases of diarrhoea were reported on Sunday at the medical camp at Vikas Nagar. Of these nine were referred to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital,Sector 16,and one patient was referred to Civil Hospital,Manimajra. All civil dispensaries remained open on Sunday.

Around eight water samples taken from the area had failed the test. A week after the outbreak of diarrhoea was detected, more than 2,000 area residents were diagnosed with suffering from the disease. While doctors claim that the cause of the outbreak is contaminated water supply, civic body officials have been making attempts to get to the root of the problem without much success.

On Friday, the area from where more cases were detected was isolated. Houses were supplied with water from one tubewell. Extra chlorine was added to the water, which was supplied throughout the day.

One of the problems that the civic body had detected was that the residents were using boosters during non-supply hours. In order to ensure that this was not done, the supply hours were increased. The residents of Vikas Nagar receive water from four tubewells.

MC officials led by Municipal Commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh visited various colonies of the city on Sunday to check the supply of water. At Dadumajra, residents have complained about cases of diarrhoea in the area. Over the past few days, sanitation drives and raids on unauthorised meat and fish sellers have been conducted. Vendors selling cut fruit have been removed from Mauli Jagran.

Questions on the outbreak of diarrhoea were also raised by nominated councillor Shagufta Parveen at a recently held meeting of the Water Supply and Sewerage Committee of MC. She demanded that responsibility should be fixed on officials concerned.
