From dance and theatre workshops to nature treks and art schools,there are plenty of options available for children and adults this summer
Here are some creative initiatives being organised around the city to keep you occupied and absorbed during the relentless summer.
MOVE IT: Dance away your stress with the help of professional guidance. Shiamak Davars Institute for Performing Arts (SDIPA),in collaboration with the Durga Das Foundation will hold its annual Summer Funk from May 24 to June 10. Here,wannabe dancers can pick up skills in modern,contemporary and fusion dances irrespective of their age,gender or prior training in dance. Designed as a platform to tap talent,they promise to help you shed your inhibitions and live the motto,Have feet,will dance. Enrolments are on at Nehru Bhavan,Sector 24 on a first-come first-serve basis. At Spiritu-all,dancer and instructor Gagan is holding workshops on jazz,belle,fusion and contemporary dance forms. She recommends street dancing,an energetic amalgamation of hip-hop and funk dance styles. Street dance is fast,agile,dramatic and powerful and expresses ones pent up emotions, says Gagan. Tanushree,who has a troupe called Flames,is here from Mumbai to conduct a 20-day workshop. The end of the workshop will see a grand show featuring various dance forms like Latin Club,Latin Dance Sport (Jive,Cha Cha Cha,Samba,Rumba,Paso Doble),Modern Ballroom (Waltz,Tango,Quickstep),Freestyle,Bollywood and Jazz.

HEALTH ON THE PLATE: Fast-paced school life,assignments and hectic outdoor schedules often have adverse consequences on healthy eating habits. Aditi Mehrotras Arneys Backyard wants to address that deficit. Starting May 26,Mehrotra will don her apron and whip up recipes for healthier lunches and snacks. Kids can team up with her and plan out their week-long healthy menus. It is being held at The Millennium School Mohali,with a bus facility at hand.

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE: If being in close proximity with nature is your way of unwinding,then join the 10-day environment and art camp in Himachal Pradesh,Thanda-Paani,approx 80 kms ahead of Shimla. Jitesh and his team will take you on treks,teach you to light camp fires,cook and create art. We will learn about creative and eco-friendly ways of engaging with the environment. ALL WORLDS A STAGE: For children who love the spotlight,an intensive theatre camp will help them hone their skills,ending with an exciting performance. Chakresh,a theatre director and actor hopes to allow children to discover the artist within,using fairy tales,myths,legends and stories of their own creation. Children will stage an adaptation of A Midsummer Nights Dream. The workshop is being held at Planet Fitness in Sector 8 from May 24 to June 13. Call at 0172-5076490,5076491 to sign up. Theatre actor Sheetal Gainds Creative Daffodils is organizing a workshop at Jelly Bean Junction in Sector 35 (2623263). It is an effort to help a child discover expression,creativity,performance and stage presence, adds Gaind. Theatre and dance are being combined together at Natya Natch,a theatre and dance workshop at YPS,Mohali.
ART zone: Get experimental,as Dev at Coveda in Sector 18 makes you learn the art of handmade paper-making,use water colours,work with papier machie and explore clay modelling. You can also learn to create and have fun with discarded material. The animation workshop guided by Subhasis Neogi will help you create manual and digital storyboards and work with paper/sand/clay/puppet animation. Sumeet and Manjot have also lined up some sensorial activities. All workshops here are open to children between 5 and 14,and are at least,a week long,all beginning May 24. At Kids Own in Sector 17,Artists at Work will offer a range of craft,pottery,painting activities to develop imagination,concentration and patience. The schedules and timings are flexible here. The Go Bananas Kids Summer Camp at the The British School,Sector 44 is offering a range of activities like theatre,freestyle dance,crafts,social awareness projects,painting,creative arts,film making workshop,field visit,splash party and also a stage performance.
