Want universities to offer more courses, says Smriti Irani

The minister was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Central University of Punjab.

Union minister for Human Resource Development Smriti Irani stressed on the need to introduce courses like water conservation, farm technology and food processing management in top institutes across the country. This would make them unique, she said.

The minister was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Central University of Punjab at Ghudda village in Bathinda district. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal were also present at the function.

She said that such courses would help states like Punjab which is an agrarian state and needs bright minds to help further the cause of agriculture. “I will be glad if the food processing industry can be linked with education,” Irani said. “I am keen to sign MoUs in this regard.”

She also spoke of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan, a government of India initiative, under which professional institutes like the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will adopt five villages and involve its students in its development. She asked Dr R K Kohli, the vice-chancellor of the upcoming university in Ghudda, to implement the programme in his university too.
Noticing a person recording her speech she said, “Look at him recording this event. If he wants to share this event over the internet, he will be worried about his data usage. Universities in the country must provide wireless internet facility to their students so that they can access the internet without worry of limited data.”
