Vox Populi

Around two years ago,the Chandigarh Administration had constructed cycle and rickshaw tracks along all sector-dividing roads to ease traffic congestion on the main roads.

Parking woesParking vehicles in the tri-city has become a problem, which is getting worse with more people buying cars. The markets, especially in the northern sectors of Chandigarh, are flooded with cars. In the absence of designated spaces, vehicles are parked in a haphazard manner. The police come once or twice every month and challan all vehicles parked wrongly or on the pavement. But does this solve the problem? The police would be justified in issuing challans to people only when designated spaces are provided to park vehicles?

H S Tiwana,ChandigarhHeard of lane-driving?Around two years ago,the Chandigarh Administration had constructed cycle and rickshaw tracks along all sector-dividing roads to ease traffic congestion on the main roads. These tracks were constructed with crores of rupees and all cyclists,rickshaw-pullers and pedestrians were supposed to use these tracks. It was a commendable idea. But these tracks are not used by those for whom these were constructed. Cyclists, rickshaws, carts and other slow-moving vehicles continue to ply on the main roads. There is nobody to check them or guide them to use their lane for a safe journey.

Traffic police is never seen on the city roads except when some VVIP is on a visit to the City Beautiful. But this traffic hazard goes on with impunity. The Administration should look into this matter. All those who break traffic laws should be heavily fined. This will act as a deterrent and reduce accidents. Also, these lanes remain in a state of neglect. I hope the authorities will look into this matter to improve the traffic situation in the city.

Open space or garbage dump?
A vast open area in Sector-30 A,near BSNL/ESI Colony,is being used as a dumping ground for construction waste. Several heaps of such material have piled up,which are an eye sore for residents. There is an imminent need to clean the area. Further, the authorities should take steps to ensure that such open areas do not become garbage dumps,as it tarnishes the image of Chandigarh.

UT deserves creditThe Chandigarh Administration deserves credit for waiving the need for occupation certificates in property transfers. The decision will give relief to property owners, particularly senior citizens and NRIs,intending to sell their property. The Punjab government, which is in the process of simplifying various procedures through administrative reforms, should also include this rule for public interest.

Conserve waterMarch 22 is celebrated as World Water Day every year. There is an immediate need to conserve water and provide clean drinking water to all. If an individual desires,s/he can save almost 10 litres of water daily. Also, government institutions should be careful in using this natural resource. The Administration should spare some funds to provide safe drinking water to all.
