Veteran journalist passes away

Veteran journalist and freedom fighter Dev Raj Puri died here late on Monday evening after a prolonged illness.

Veteran journalist and freedom fighter Dev Raj Puri died here late on Monday evening after a prolonged illness. He was 81. He is survived by three sons and three daughters.

Born in Lahore in June 1928,Puri had been active in journalism for more than four decades. He was also jailed during the freedom movement. Besides working as correspondent for Hindi and Urdu dailies published from Punjab,he also owned the weekly newspaper,Shimla Times. The cremation was held at Sanjauli on Tuesday,which was attended by a large number of citizens,mediapersons and senior government officials. Horticulture minister Narinder Bragta and Director,Information and Public Relations,B D Sharma were also present.

Five die as bus falls into gorge
BILASPUR:
Five persons lost their lives and 42 others sustained injuries when a tourist bus fell into a 100-foot deep gorge in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh in the early hours of Tuesday. The bus carrying 47 people was on way to Delhi from Manali when the accident occurred near Garha More,about 65 km from the district headquarters,around 4 am,the police said. The accident reportedly took place due to brake failure. The victims were mainly from Gujarat,Rajasthan and Haryana.
