During the resumed hearing of the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking heritage status for the city, senior standing counsel for UT Administration Sanjay Kaushal said that the issue of framing guidelines for preservation of heritage items has been seriously deliberated by all concerned quarters and the details will be placed on record. The next date of hearing is February 2.
Alok Jagga, counsel for petitioner Ajay Jagga, argued that the pilferage of heritage items in the city is endless and the UT is not serious about the issue. He further stated that the absence of guidelines regarding inventory of the items was exacerbating the problem.
Senior standing counsel for UT,Sanjay Kaushal stated that all departments of the Administration have already been issued instructions that no artifacts or heritage furniture should be sold and that the guidelines for preservation of heritage items were also being deliberated.
The Administration is in the process of making an inventory of all the heritage items that are in its possession. Concerns had been raised after items of heritage value for the city were being auctioned at auction houses across the globe. The Administration had no details of what was still present in each department. Thereafter a committee was constituted that visited various departments to identify the items of heritage value, particularly furniture. The departments were asked to prepare inventories of the items that are present with them.
The items that were sold from the city as junk by different departments over the years for a pittance fetched extraordinary amounts at international auctions. This woke up the city, and the departments,to the value of the items. However, sketches prepared by the creator of the city Le Corbusier as well as items like tapestries are now missing.
