Even with two months to go for the Mayoral elections, there are a number of prospective candidates who have started lobbying within the political parties for being selected. While there are some who are openly staking their claim for the post, the others are silently working towards the goal.
The Mayors post next year is for a general category candidate. Generally a candidate each is fielded by the Congress and BJP-SAD alliance for the Mayors post. Apart from the Mayor, the senior deputy mayor and the deputy mayor are also elected. While the names are finally decided and announced a few days before the elections, lobbying this year has started earlier than usual.
In the Congress there are several hopefuls in the fray. These include councillors Subhash Chawla,Pardeep Chhabra,Sat Prakash Aggarwal,Darshan Garg and Mukesh Bassi. While Chawla and Chhabra have been mayors in previous terms, the other three have been elected to the civic body for the first time.
Within the BJP,there are councillors who owe allegiance to different camps of the party. The only councillor of the party who was part of the MC in the last tenure is Rajesh Gupta. The others including Arun Sood,Davesh Moudgil and Saurabh Joshi are first timers. Due to the factionalism within the party, the name of the leader of opposition has also not been decided 10 months into the tenure of the new elected body. The decision on the name of the Mayoral candidate will be a tough task for the party leadership.
The Congress at present has 12 councillors in the MC House. the BJP-SAD alliance has 11,the BSP has two and one is independent. Apart from them there are nine nominated councillors. The local MP who is an ex-officio member of the House also has a vote. During the election for the present Mayor, the nominated councillors had enmasse voted for the Congress.
