The year was 2007. Gurmeet Aman had stepped out of the comfort zone of his village,Sarai-Banjara in Rajpura,for the first time to pursue his dream of becoming a singer. “People told me Chandigarh is the mecca of opportunities and so here I was,holding an advertisement clip of a contest by Society for Tourism and Entertainment Promotion in Chandigarh (STEPS). They had to select their team for choir,” says Aman,who goes back in time and hums the song niki nikki gal that saw him emerge a winner. In the era of digital music,where music stores are not selling much of CDs,Aman is fulfilling a promise that he made to himself to release his own album someday. “And the day is today,” says Aman holding the CD high. He officially released his first album Çhann Da Tukra at Hotel Classic on Monday.

The album comprises nine songs,a mix of romantic,sad and village numbers. While,Jatt is a typical revenge song of landlords,Dhokha is a broken heart’s tale. Another song called Billo is a fun track and Aaja ve yaara represents the times of a lovers wait,” reels this 32-year-old artist,as he sings the six minute title track for the audience and tells us that the songs offer something for everyone.

“They are miles away from vulgarity and are melodious and clean,” says Aman ,who has put all the songs of the album for free download on http://www.soundplanet.com in order to reach out to the audience.

Having performed on All India Radio,Patiala and festivals organised by the Chandigarh Administration,Aman was spotted by Bawa Sushil,the music director and owner of Sound Planet Record Music,who approached him for the album. “Thereafter,writers were invited to pen the lyrics and we were on a roll,” says Aman. As for his next project,Aman,who will soon begin work on his next,has his fingers crossed.
