Titles in sight for local players

After dominating throughout till the penultimate day,Chandigarh players will try to finish on a high affair when the finalists take on each other on the concluding day of the AITA Talent Series Tennis Tournament at Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association courts at Sector 10.

Leading the pack will be CLTA trainees Suraj Beniwal and Atul Sri Patel who will battle for the boys’ Under-18 singles title. Fifth seed Suraj ousted seventh seed Nischay Rawal in straight sets 6-2,6-3.

Meanwhile,Atul Sri Patel,the third seed,got the better of unseeded Fatehdeep Singh 4-6,7-5,6-0 to enter the final. After losing the first set 4-6,Atul bounced back and claimed the second set 7-5. However,he had saved his best for the last as he played some superb shots to blank his opponent in the third set 6-0.

Top seed Gundeep Kaur of Punjab prevailed over Priyanka Rawat of Uttarakhand,and the third seed,6-4,6-4 to make her foray into the finals of the girl’s Under-18 singles category. Similarly,Jaspreet Kaur,also from Punjab,thrashed Nandini Sharma of Chandigarh 6-0,6-0. The second seed displayed a power-packed game to unsettle her opponent and claimed both the sets without losing any game.

In the boys’ Under-14 category,second seed Jajbir Singh of Punjab defeated wildcard and fourth seed Dheer Anush Bhatti of Chandigarh 6-3,6-3 to claim a final berth. He will face Sachin Kumar of Chandigarh who shocked top seed Hardeep Singh Sandhu of Punjab 6-4,6-3. Meanwhile,in the girls’ Under-14 category,Charvi Saxena will face Nikita Bishnoi of CLTA.

Top seed Charvi faced no difficulty in ousting third seed Kavita Mishra of Maharashtra 6-1,6-4. In another semi-final match,fourth seed Nikita Bishnoi of Chandigarh upset second seed Padamaja Gawande of Maharashtra 6-3,6-2.

In the boys’ Under-18 doubles category,the top seeded pair of Garry S. Amor and Sonam Phuntsok will justify their seeding against the duo of Suraj Beniwal and Atul Sri Patel.

The top seeded pair got the better of Nischay Rawal and Manoj 4-2,1-4,10-7 to secure their berth in the final. In the other semi-final match,second seeded pair of Atul Sri Patel and Suraj Beniwal recorded a 4-2,4-5 (7),10-4 win over Fatehdeep Singh and Bhavtaranpreet Singh.
