The Panchkula Police Sunday arrested three men for allegedly demanding Rs 20 lakh from a local builder and threatening to kill his two children if he failed to pay up.
The accused, identified as Vipin (24) Jitender (23) and Jaipal (24), are from Unnao district in Uttar Pradesh, and have been living at Rally village in Sector 12 A of Panchkula for the past several years.
The accused had allegedly made a telephone call to Satpal Singla at his house in Sector 6 on August 24.
Singla is the owner of S P Singla Constructions Private Limited.
The builder reported the matter to the police and submitted the mobile number (89604-31820) from which the call was made.
Speaking at a press conference held at Mini Secretariat, Sector 1, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Anil Dhawan said the SIM used by the accused to make the call on the landline number of the builder led to their arrest.
“The Call Detail Record (CDR) and Customer Acquisition Form (CAF) of the specific mobile number was obtained by the police, and with the help of the Cyber Cell, we were able to nab them.
The accused were arrested around 4 am from a house in village Rally, Sector 12 A following a tip-off,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Anil Dhawan.
The interrogation of the three revealed that Jai Pal used to repair gas stoves and other cooking appliances at Sector 9 Booth market while Vipin was a taxi driver in Sector 5. Jitender worked as a confectioner (halwai) in Sector 16.
According to the police, Jai Pal was the kingpin.
The police said it was Jai Pal who had allegedly bought the SIM for Rs 100 using a fake ID from a shop in Unnao.
“It was Jai Pal’s plan to make quick money through extortion and Vipin and Jitender then joined him. We are investigating the case to see their involvement in any previous cases,” said the police.
The police have registered a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder), 387 (Putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt), in order to commit extortion of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the three at Sector 5 Police Station.
The accused will be produced in a local court on Monday.
