An exhibition not very imaginatively named Three,is showcasing the works of three artists alumni of the Government College of Art. For Rajender Kumar, the exhibition is special since it is the first time that he is showing his paintings. Since Im primarily a sculptor, painting was a unique experience, says Kumar, who paints using the tools of a sculptor and strives for a sense of three-dimensionality in his canvases. His day job at the Chandigarh Museum, keeps him busy but he has managed to infuse his lively canvases with the rhythm of the changing seasons. He uses textures and vibrant colours to depict the varied moods of nature and his response to it. I can hear the rain every time I look at this canvas, he says about a work that is encompassed by a shower of blue. Earth, sky, water and air,are his muses.
For Vishal Bhatnagar the inspiration is mankind a symbol of universal energy. Any attempt,by any art process,to dissipate this energy is anti-art, declares the artist. His canvases are dominated by bright blues, greens, reds and his images idyllically depict man and woman in a harmonious co-existence. Mankind is a knowledgeable and wise being and this brings him out of the narrow, parochial and local, says Bhatnagar. His works also speak of the correlation of humanbeings and the divine creator. He uses various signs and symbols that convey the idea of Vedic darshan.
No art can fully express the hidden reality it tries to depict. One must search beyond the lines and patterns, says Bhatnagar.
Rajesh Kalsi works with mixed media too and is also interested in the Vedas. He has in fact done his PhD in Vedic Studies. Vedas express the duality of life and how to refine oneself and enjoy colours, form and space, says Kalsi. He uses textures and backgrounds of pinks and blues against which he essays bright yellow forms, black dots and geometric forms. These according to the artist are meant to represent the relationship between man and a woman. The exhibition is on at the Gallery of the Art Museum till March 10.
