The Ideas factory

A period fantasy,a sci-fi film, documentaries and a cultural centre are some of the projects that director Anand Gandhi is working on.

Considered a film that experimented with cinema in terms of both thought and form,Ship of Theseus is one of 2013’s most remarkable Indian films. However, all eyes have since been on the film’s young director,Anand Gandhi. The industry and the audience have been curious to see where the success of Ship of Theseus will take him — will he follow the tough path he chose or succumb to pressures and go mainstream?

The filmmaker answered this question last week with a press announcement of the upcoming projects under his company Recyclewala Labs. The director and his partner,Soham Shah, showcased a few stills from the films in production. The plans are far from what anyone would have expected.

Gandhi is currently busy penning his future directorial project (untitled as of now),about a theatre director countering his fear of abandonment after the three most important women in his life embark on their individual journeys. As part of his production house, which he co-owns with Shah, there are several projects underway — three of which are fiction and three non-fiction.

Among the fiction films,Tumbad might be the first to hit the cinemas. It is a period fantasy by Rahi Anil Barve, set against the backdrop of colonial India, and has Shah in the lead role of an anti-hero. Taramandal,a sci-fi drama by Rohit Pandey,is in its development stage, while Adesh Prasad’s Barsati explores the fragile relationship between two partners.

“We don’t wish to limit ourselves to fiction alone. Recyclewala Labs wishes to explore ideas that stimulate and the form they take is immaterial,” said Gandhi. His team will also dabble in web portals, books, theatre, art,TV and radio,to explore a variety of subjects. They are also planning to have a cultural centre.

“Work on all these projects is underway. But our documentaries — Election Day,The Newborn and Tumbad — will be the first to see the light of the day,” said Gandhi.

Shah,on his part, explained that none of the projects are elitist in the way that they will alienate the masses. “It’s a large variety and we hope to make it accessible to everyone,” he said.
