Teachers protest long-pending promotions

A hunger strike was organised by the UT Cadre Educational Employees Union to draw attention to their long-pending demands regarding promotions. Five union members observed the strike and around 150 school teachers joined them at the rally ground in Sector 25.

There are around 500 teachers on deputation in UT for the last 25 to 35 years and they should be sent back to their parent states. When many vacancies are there in Punjab and Haryana,teachers from these states should not be allowed to occupy position here, said president Swarn Singh Kamboj.

The members pointed at the irregularities in the present system of promotions. The rule that an employee should be working for a minimum of five years before he or she can be taken on deputation is not being followed and work instructors have not been getting their pay scales for the last 24 years, claimed chairman Ranbir Singh.

Japinder Kaur,the vice president,said that she had been teaching in various schools for the past 22 years but had not yet been promoted,while she had witnessed her juniors gaining superior positions.

Teachers from universities and colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh also observed an Education Bandh in response to a call by the Punjab Federation of University and College Teachers Organisation today.

Their others demands include release of arrears of UGC pay sclaes,enhancement in retirement age,filling up of vacancies,more funds for higher education and pension gratuity scheme for staff.
