Changing City: Ludhiana’s ‘gedi route’ now leads to sprawling Sunview Plaza

Sunview Plaza is probably the only place in Ludhiana in current times where a number of food chains and clothing brands can all be found next to each other.

For Ludhianvis born in the 1990s or before, the only “gedi route” in the city that invokes memories is the Sarabha Nagar market, housing the good, old eating joints, including Kipps, Hot Breads, Cremica ice-cream parlor and Bukhara among others.

So popular has been the “Kipps” that the market is also famously known as “Kipps market”. The eatery has always been the favorite for its potato patties, hot dogs, pastries, cold coffee etc.

While the Sarabha Nagar market with its old charm still continues to rule the hearts of many, the Gen-Z in Ludhiana now has a new “gedi route”. Emerging as the hot favorite is the “Sunview Plaza”, a sprawling market developed in Ayali Kalan village near South City (towards Canal road).

The high street style market spread over 6 acres, and designed in grand European style architecture, is proving to be gastronomical delight. In past few months, Sunview Plaza has emerged as the go-to place for city’s youths; either it’s a birthday or a get-together.

Sunview Plaza is probably the only place in Ludhiana in current times where a number of food chains and clothing brands can all be found next to each other. When it comes to food, everything from Tim Hortons and Starbucks to McDonald and Sagar Ratna, are available in the vicinity.

Jatin Kaura, a college student, who often visits the plaza for get-togethers with his friends, says what has made Sunview Plaza a new destination for the youths is the variety of food joints available in one market.

“We have Tim Hortons, Barista and Starbucks for coffee while Nik Baker’s and McDonald’s are also nearby if one feels hungry. One can also enjoy amazing waffles and other desserts at Brooks and for tea lovers there is Tea Hut. My friends who like pizza visit here for 1830 Pizzeria. There are just so many options available that it’s always a good idea to visit here. Earlier, we used to visit Sarabha Nagar market but more options are now available in Sunview now. Several new outlets such as The Edge, Cinnabon, MyFresh, Chili’s American Grill & Bar, Pluk by Wok Singh are a delight for food lovers,” he said.

Another reason why Sunview is being preferred is for its ample parking space, which isn’t the case anymore in Sarabha Nagar. “We always get stuck in traffic and there is total chaos in Sarabha Nagar market due to limited parking area. The Sarabha Nagar market was designed when not everyone owned four-wheelers but times have changed now. Sunview is new establishment so the parking space is ample to accommodate vehicles,” says Shivam Gupta, who had his college reunion at a joint in Sunview Plaza.

Other features, including soothing water fountains, outdoor seating outside every joint, grand architecture, location of the plaza (away from city’s buzzing areas) and ample green cover in nearby South City colonies have added to the reasons why the gedi route of Ludhiana has now diverted towards Sunview.
