A group of residents allegedly thrashed a stray dog mercilessly for hours after tying its limbs with a rope in Garden City locality of Sahnewal area in Ludhiana. After the dog died, they allegedly tied the carcass and took it somewhere.

The incident took place on Monday late, but Ludhiana police registered an FIR against five persons only on Wednesday. None of them were arrested yet till the filing of this report.

A local animal lover had recorded the incident on phone. The video shows the accused persons tying the dog with a rope and stick and taking it somewhere.

The FIR was registered on the complaint of Mani Singh, a member of People For Animals (PFA) and the president of Help for Animals, an NGO.

The accused were identified as Harinder Singh, V K Khurana, Davinder, Sukhdev, Vikramjit and their accomplices, who are yet to be identified.

Mani Singh in his complaint told police that he was informed by a local animal lover (Baljinder Kaur) that some persons had brutally thrashed a stray dog and dumped the carcass somewhere with the help of their unidentified accomplices.

The accused claimed that the dog used to bite strangers who would come in the area, he said in the complaint. When he rushed to the spot, he found blood marks in the street and Harinder Singh was taking away the carcass with his accomplices, he added.

The videos suggested that the accused first lured the dog with eatables and tied its limbs with a piece of rope. They choked the dog with a piece of rope and then thrashed it to death.

An FIR under Sections 428 (Mischief by killing or maiming animal of the value of ten rupees), 429 (Mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc., of any value or any animal of the value of fifty rupees) of IPC, and Section 11 (A) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act was registered against the accused at Sahnewal police station.

Sub-inspector Harmeet Singh, investigating officer in the case, said that the dog’s carcass was yet to be recovered and the accused were absconding. “Local residents said that the dog used to bite strangers, so a group of residents got infuriated and assaulted it. We are trying to find the carcass,” he said.
