Maiden FIDE Rating chess tourney on anvil
In order to produce rated chess players from the region,Chandigarh Chess Association (CCA) will organise the 1 st Chandigarh All India Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament from January 1 to 6 at St Xaviers Senior Secondary School ,Sector 44. The tournament is recognised by All India Chess Federation and the FIDE (World Chess Federation). This is for the first time that such a prestigious tournament is being organised in this region. Around 200 players,including many titled and internationally rated players,from all over the country are going to participate in the event. Few International Masters also are expected to take part in the event with IM Atanu Lahiri having given his nod for the tournament. With as many as 200 players from all over the country expected,75 players have already confirmed his participation in the tournament. CCA hopes to host another such FIDE Rating Chess Tournament in the summers next year.
Godrej & Boyce XI emerge victorious
PANCHKULA:In a thrilling encounter,Godrej & Boyce XI defeated Yes Bank XI by four wickets to win the final match of the VIIth Girish Nayyar Memorial League Cricket Tournament,organised by the Chandigarh Sports Club at the Tau Devi Lal Cricket Stadium,Sector 3,Panchkula,today.
Yes Bank XI won the toss and elected to bat first. Led by Umesh Kaira’s impressive 71,Yes Bank made 180 for the loss of six wickets in 25 overs. Umesh’s knock which came off 59 balls included six boundaries and a six. Gurinder Saini contributed with 30 runs. In reply,Godrej & Boyce XI achieved the target in 24.2 overs losing six wickets. Tanveer Manak (66) and Inderjeet (25) were the main scorers for the winning side.In the post match ceremony,Mukesh Bhandari,regional head,Godrej & Boyce,distributed the prizes. Tanveer Manak of Godrej & Boyce XI was declared man of the match.

Parashars blazing 151 helps PU win
Talented Chandigarh batsman Amit Parashar played a blazing knock of 151 to help Panjab University beat M.J.P. Rohilkhand University,Bareilly in their first match of the North Zone Inter-University cricket tournament for women being held at Faridkot.
Batting first,Panjab University colts scored total of 265 runs for the loss of three wickets in the allotted quota of 50 overs. Amit Parashar played an impressive knock to help his team reach such a competitive total. Apart from him,another Chandigarh lad Simrat Bawa did well,smashing beautiful knock of unbeaten 80 runs. In reply,M.J.P. Rohilkhand University team was bundled out for mere 127 runs. Punjab Ranji Trophy off-spinner Gaurav Gambhir bowled well to take four wickets for PU.
Karan bats DP Azad Academy to win
Riding high on Karan Aggarwal’s knock (50 runs),Desh Prem Azad Cricket Academy defeated Mohali Cricket Academy by four wickets in the week-end cricket match organised by DP Azad Academy at St Stephen’s School ground in Sector 45 on Saturday. Batting first,MCA scored 169 in 39 overs. Chasing the target,Azad Academy achieved the target in 38.2 overs by scoring 171 for 6.
Amrinder wins Jr Mr Chandigarh title
Amrinder of Flex City claimed first position in the Above 75kg to emerge as the winner of the 19 th Junior Mr Chandigarh Body Building Championship at DAV College ,Sector 10. Similarly,Pushpinder of Bon Sante in the Above 70kg category to emerge as 16 th Mr Sub-Junior Body Building Championship,while Arun Rana,winner in the Below 70 kg category,took the 10 th Mr Inter-Club Body Building Championship title.
