Stylist and designer Sahiba J Singh ventures into bespoke formal wear for pets
Dressed in a fine tweed coat embellished with sequin and sporting a collar studded with pearls,Zoya is quite a looker on the streets. The four-month-old Great Dane pup is not, however, the only one putting her best paw forward when it comes to formal wear. Ralph,a four-year-old pug,and Sean,a three-year-old Boston Terrier, also own bespoke coats that they often flaunt. The trio is glad to wag and pose for owner Sahiba J Singh, whose latest collection comprises a pret line for pets.
A well-known stylist and designer from Chandigarh,Singh,28,has previously designed Raj Kundras sehra and dressed up the likes of Vikram Chatwal for his wedding. Her celebrity client list also includes singer Malkit Singh and politician and anchor Navjot Singh Sidhu, both of whom often don her range of silk turbans.
In between handing wedding assignments,in the busy season,Singh decided to dedicate a line to her furry pals as well. They are my babies and I want to see them well-dressed. I think all pet owners would feel that way… Personally, for me,it has been a lot of fun putting these together, says Singh,as she buttons Ralphs coat, which, she points out,is way classier than the cutesy paw prints or tacky dog coats available in the market.
During winter the citys swish set often throws parties in their grand lawns. Pets are an intrinsic part of the household,I though it was time for them to be dressed for the occasion, says Singh, who designed the coats with fabrics like tweed and velvet in contrasting colours. Since its custom made, the coat fits well. I have designed the buttons as they would be on a mens jacket, says she. The doggie names, meanwhile, have been embroidered in zardozi. I love to promote traditional embroideries and I stuck to the same look here too, adds the designer, who has priced the coats Rs 3,000 onwards, and the collars at Rs 1,500.
Also part of the collection are collars encrusted with pearls and golden beads. It is to add to the jazz, smiles Singh. And even as orders are pouring in,the designer is working on leashes,in order to complete the look.
