A patient died on the spot while another man sustained serious injuries when an ambulance speeding on the wrong side collided head-on with a car on the Mohali-Kharar stretch of the National Highway-21 near Desumajra village in Mohali this noon.
Manjeet Kaur (22) of Nawanshahr was declared dead on arrival at Kharar Civil Hospital,while Surinder Batla,the car driver,a resident of Sector 38-West,Chandigarh,was admitted with several injuries.
Medical Officer of Nawanshahr Civil Hospital,Dr P S Bangar,who was accompanying the patient,said Manjeet was brought to the hospital on Thursday night after she fell in her house. She was seven months pregnant and was operated. She gave birth to a premature baby girl but suffered a cardiac arrest this morning. She was referred to Chandigarh PGIMER. On way,her pulse rate had dropped and her condition was very critical, said Bangra.
The ambulance driver said he took the wrong side as he wanted to reach the hospital and the highway was chocked. The accident disrupted traffic for almost an hour and the jam stretched to 1to 2 km.
The police have begun investigations but no case was lodged till the last report came in.
