With their all-girl band D Major,VJ Anusha Dandekar and her sisters foray into pop music

The Dandekar family has always been involved with the performing arts, and now it’s upto the Dandekar daughters to take it forward. “We are always eager to break into a song, jump on the stage or present an act. So,it was time to get together and fulfil our childhood dream of forming a band,” says VJ and actor Anusha Dandekar, here in the city’s DT Black Magic along with sisters Apeksha and Shibani, talking about their their band — D Major. “It is named after a musical scale and we’ve been working at it for a while now,” says Anusha. In town as part of the Antiquity Club Fusion Tour along with Stereo Nation, the three sisters recollect how their mother was in a band when she was in college. “She toured across India when she was young while my father has always been into acting,” they say.

Fusion will be the dominant kind of their music,as the band has been formed to bridge the gap between Indian culture and western influences, say the sisters. “You’ll have a lot of original yet eclectic score,” says Anusha. While the Dandekars have experimented with various genres, from Indi,R&B,classical, rock to fusion and hip hop,D Major’s forte lies in pop. “We are more in the lines of Spice Girls and Destiny’s Child. We have always been their fans,” say the sisters. “We want to change the way music is consumed in this country and in the process be style icons for the youth,” says Shibani, who is also pursuing fashion and acting along with music. Talk to the psychologist Apeksha, and she feels that the only message here is to be as real as possible and not go over the top.

Girl bands are infamous for dying out too soon. “We’re sisters and sisterhood is stronger than anything. Not to forget that we are doing original music,” says Anusha.

The music will vary according to the target audience, with a predominance of English tracks for the international audience and music that is quintessentially Bollywood for India. “But it will be our music and lyrics. Women have a lot to say and there is no better way than music to get it across. The world over girl bands are a dime a dozen, whereas India still lacks one,” they sign off.
