SOPU-SOI sweeps polls with record margin

In a clean sweep, the Students Organisation of Panjab University and Students Organisation of India alliance emerged victorious in the Panjab University Students’ Council elections on Friday, with its candidate for the president’s post winning by a record margin of 1,001 votes—the highest in past eight years.

So strong was the wave for the SOPU-SOI alliance that the entire panel romped home, keeping the Panjab University Students’ Union alliance away from the council. PUSU had aligned with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Indian National Students Organisation (INSO) for the 2011 elections.

It was a lucky year for SOI,as it is the first time they have been elected to the council.

The campus, which had become a fortress over the past few days, saw unprecedented security with Vice-Chancellor R C Sobti himself coming out to the university gates to check identity cards of students.

Starting from 8:30 am,as students trooped in to cast their ballot,Sobti moved from gate number 1 to gate number 2. He even got one of the vehicles challaned by the police.

The security cover ensured that the polling remained a very dull and low key affair with the departments heavily guarded by police and university security. The only place where the students were seen was the Students Centre, where the results were compiled and announced.

With more than 700 security staff, like all other places, even the Students Centre was overshadowed by the security and police personnel. For the first time, the office of Student Council was fortified and none other than the elected department representatives accompanied by the chairpersons were allowed to go upstairs leading to the office.

But as the elections results came out by 4 pm,undeterred by heavy rains, students sang and danced to the tunes of their victory slogans.

The victory procession was carried out in four-wheelers across the campus before concluding at the Students Centre. Girls were not to be outnumbered and were seen participating in the celebrations that continued for hours.

The presence of party leaders dominated the celebrations. Leaders including SOPU party president Vikramjit Middukhera and campus president Robin Brar were cheered by the crowd at the Students Center.
