The city can look forward to some reprieve from its water woes. The Municipal Corporation (MC) has proposed to lay two pipelines in Kajauli, each with a daily capacity of 40 million gallons (mgd). A part of the modified detailed project of Augmentation of Water Supply Scheme-Phase VII and VIII,the proposal was recently presented in the MC House.
The civic body had initially taken approval to lay pipelines at Phase V and VI in Kajauli. However, the Punjab government had refused to release water, stating that while Chandigarh could go ahead with Phase VII and VIII,Punjab will take water from Phase V and VI.
Following this,a modified project report for Phase VII and VIII was presented before the House. According to the report,66 acres of land will be acquired for laying two pipelines with a capacity of 40 mgd each. An amount of Rs 66 crore has been earmarked for land acquisition.
Once Phase VII and VIII are operational,40 mgd of water will be released initially. While Chandigarh will get 34 mgd,3 mgd each will be given to Haryana and Chandimandir.
The land is being acquired keeping in view the requirements of Phase IX and X. Addressing the councillors,Municipal Commissioner Dr Roshan Sunkaria had stated that proposals were being taken into consideration keeping in view the needs of the city in the coming years. Provisions are being made for an additional 80 mgd of water for the city.
At present,Chandigarh receives a total of 87 mgd of water. Of this, while 67 mgd is canal water, the rest comes from the tubewells. During peak summer, the demand for water is 113 mgd. This is likely to increase with the growing population.
During summers, the residents have to face problems due to water shortage those who stay on the upper floors complain of low water pressures or at times,no supply at all.
