Smile Please,OK

Tired of melodramatic soaps, actor Kiran Karmarkar opts for comedy on his return to the small screen.

Can there ever be a man as perfect as Om Agarwal of Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii? He was the perfect son,the perfect husband — and eventually became too perfect for actor Kiran Karmarkar to tolerate. “Television was and is still about one leading lady crying for her rights while the men watch from the sidelines. It was getting far too melodramatic for my liking,” says Karmarkar aka Om,explaining his three-year sabbatical from the small screen.

Karmarkar is now back on TV and this time he wants his audiences to laugh. “My new role is that of comedy,” says the actor, happily timing his comic lines and expression as he enjoys a renewed stint in the world of “cliched programming and content”. Called Zindagi Kahe Smile Please, currently on Life Ok,the tele-series is about making people smile. “I return with a new show on a new channel and in a new avatar,” sums up the actor.

The soap tells the story of a rich man who educates his driver’s son along with his own. But life takes a nasty turn and he becomes bankrupt. As a result,he and his family have to move into the driver’s house and stay with his family. “I am the rich man’s son,Hans Raj,who is always angry and irritated because of his situation,” says the actor.

Most other TV serials on air at present would’ve revved up the human drama and tears, and milked the storyline for pathos, feels Karmarkar. He is glad that the makers of this show,Optimystix production, opted to keep the mood of the story light-hearted. “There are hilarious confrontations between the two families, the two men and it’s fun watching them sparring,” smiles Karmarkar about the series that is already on air.

He says that he is restricting his TV work to one series at a time. In the meantime,he is indulging himself by acting in theatre and films. His play with Vipul Shah and Shefalee Shah,Bas Itna Sa Khwab has been running successfully all over India,he informs. His Marathi film,Aarohi Goshta Tiganchi (Katha Teen Ki) was well received at the Pune International Film Festival. “I also play a young Chief Minister in the award-winning Kshanokshani Har Pal,a suspense thriller,” he adds.

He will also be seen in Dibakar Banerjee’s new film,Shanghai. “I am done devoting 25 days a month to TV. I want to do something different and challenging now,be it in films or theatre,” says the actor.
