Several rallies on campus

The entire community at the Panjab University,from students to teaching and non-teaching faculty, carried out rallies,fast,candle march,street plays on the campus in support of Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement.

The entire community at the Panjab University,from students to teaching and non-teaching faculty, carried out rallies,fast,candle march,street plays on the campus in support of Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement.

Panjab University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) along with teachers,students and many members of civil society staged a candle-march in the campus on Friday. The march began from Gandhi Bhawan and concluded at University gate number 1.

PUTA president Prof Akshaya Kumar while expressing his concern at the growing levels of corruption encouraged his colleagues and teachers to join the movement against corruption.

Prof Manjit Singh,former PUTA president underlined the urgency of the anti-corruption campaign. Gurdeep Singh,president,Panjab University Staff Association (PUSA) said that the movement against corruption is now irrevocable and from now it has to move forward. Dr Khalid,Secretary PUTA asserted that civil society and democratic institutions must work together towards the enactment of Jan Lokpal Bill. Rajiv Godara of Sampoorn Kranti Manch expressed hope that the movement launched by the civil society would reach its logical conclusion and the government would concede to the demand of an effective Jan Lokpal Bill.

Another rally was organised by Panjab University Student Union (PUSU) in support of Anna and against corruption,it was kicked off from the Chemistry Department at around 11 am and ended at the Student Centre around 2 pm. Friday morning saw empty departments as a majority of students joined the march against corruption. The protesters wore black bands on their arms as a sign of anger against the government and its unethical acts.

While another organisation,INSO (Indian National Students’ Organisation) staged a fast at the Student Centre in support of Jan Lokpal Bill and Anna Hazare. The fast was carried out from 9 am till 8 pm. A street play was also performed during lunch time by UIET students’ group Osmium. The play highlighted the scams plaguing the country.

In the evening,a candle march was organised from the Gandhian Studies to the Students’ Centre covering all the hostels and Sector 14 market.
