One of the pivotal points of Sampurna Chattarji’s new novel Land of the Well is the human desire to belong to a social group. The story begins with a teenage boy finding himself drawn to a group of holidaymakers in Goa and attracted to a woman,Momo. It was launched on

Friday at Kitabkhana in Mumbai; with actor Shernaz Patel and poet Ranjit Hoskote reading excerpts.

Chattarji has a penchant for fuzzy characters and oddballs. Her fascination with the slightly dark characters helps create a world that doesn’t spoon-feed the readers. “I don’t like the idea of light falling on things; you don’t know whether to fully trust that the characters are how they appear to be,” she says.
