This year, when it comes to popularity, commerce has scored over other disciplines. College authorities say the number of admission applications received for a few hundred seats for BCom run into thousands.
After commerce, the other favourites among students are Bachelors in Business Administration (BBA) and Bachelors in Computer Applications (BCA).
Dr A C Vaid, principal of SD College,Sector 32,says,We have 260 seats for BCom for which around 4,500 applications have so far been received. We expect the cut off to be somewhere around 93 per cent this year.
The college is seeing a similar rush for BBA and BCA.
In the MCM DAV College in Sector 36 also, the maximum applications have come in for BCom. The college has 210 seats, and the number of applications has already exceeded 2,500.
And though the college is yet to get approval to start a BBA course,it has received hundreds of applications for it.
College spokesperson Aashish Mudgil says,Looking at the number of applications for BCom,it seems we will be through with admissions on the first day itself.
Students,on the other hand, say good pay packages after Masters makes commerce their preferred option. With the kind of competition and saturation in the job market, most prefer to study a course which would secure their future. Commerce is one area which is growing. Also,it is a subject different from the conventional science subjects, says Shruit, another applicant.
Another student Rajat says,It is the money that matters these days, and commerce can land one good pay packages even at the entry level. This is the reason why I am interested in commerce.
Besides popular private colleges, government colleges also see a rush for BCom,in which admissions close before other courses.
