The driver of the car that hit a scooter in Sector 40 last week,resulting in the death of a couple,surrendered before the police today. The accused has been identified as Sector 38 resident Puneet (25) alias Pintu. He had been arrested and a case of causing death due to negligence,destruction of evidence and rash driving has been registered against him. The accused runs an optical shop in Sector 38. The police have also seized the Zen which was reportedly involved in the accident.
The accused and his father Surinder Pal Singla had come to the police station in the morning. Surinder had tried to shield his son by claiming that he was behind the wheels when the accident took place. The police verified the mobile phone tower location of both,through which it was found that Puneet was in Sector 40 at the time of the incident while his father was in Sector 38. The friends and family of the deceased also reached the police station after they got news that the accuseds father was going to be booked instead of his son.
Meanwhile,footage from the CCTV cameras installed at a doctors clinic in Sector 40,where the accident took place,proved helpful. Even though the cars registration number was not visible in the footage,the cameras recorded the side view of the car.
The family members of the deceased showed the footage to their known and one of them identified the car from the alloy wheels and the black strip on its door. After inquiring about the car,it was found that it was owned Puneets brother-in-law who stays in Sector 38. The family members of the deceased zeroed in on the house of the accused but it was found to be locked.
Sector 39 police station SHO Inspector Charanjit Singh said,During our investigation a neighbour of the accused told us that Puneets car had been damaged from the front portion and had also been under covers for the some time after the accident. He added that the family had gone away and even the car was not in the house. Meanwhile the accused got the damaged part of the bumper repaired in Muktsar and also tried to give it an old look.
On May 7 Puneet had fled after his car rammed into a scooter driven by Ashok Kumar(38),a mechanic,in sector 40. The scooter had two other occupants,Ashoks wife Santosh (32),and their daughter Muskan (9). While Ashok died on his way to hospital,Santosh succumbed to injuries the next day. Muskan escaped with minor injuries.
